How to Set Up an IPTV EPG Step by Step

Before you add the EPG source

Have the playlist and EPG details supplied by your authorized service or guide provider ready. The guide address may end in .xml or .xml.gz, but many valid URLs have no visible file extension. Do not publish or share a private URL because it may contain account credentials.

Set the device to the correct automatic date, time, and time zone. An incorrect device clock can make accurate guide data look several hours early or late.

• Confirm that live channels already load in the player.
• Copy the complete EPG URL without adding spaces or changing capitalization.
• Check that the app supports an external EPG or XMLTV source.
• Keep a backup of any working playlist and player settings.

Add and assign the guide source

Open the player settings and find EPG, TV guide, or data sources. Add the URL as a new source and give it a recognizable label. If the app manages several playlists, explicitly assign the new guide source to the intended playlist.

Run the update and wait for it to finish. A large XMLTV file can take time to download and parse, especially on a lower-powered TV device. Closing the app during the first import can leave only partial data.

Verify channel mapping

Check several familiar channels after the first update. If some listings appear and others are blank, the guide source is probably loading but the unmatched channels need attention. Compare the playlist tvg-id with the XMLTV channel ID before relying on channel-name matching.

Map priority channels manually if the player supports it. If many channels fail for the same reason, correct the IDs in a playlist editor rather than repeating the same manual assignment on every device.

Check time, update interval, and retention

When programme titles appear at the wrong time, verify the device clock and the guide source time zone first. Apply a player time shift only when the same consistent offset remains after those checks.

Use a sensible automatic refresh interval if the player offers one. Refreshing extremely often does not repair bad source data and may cause unnecessary downloads. The guide provider determines how many future days are available; the player cannot create schedule data that was not supplied.

Test the finished setup

Restart the player once, open the guide, and verify current and future programmes on a small sample of channels. Then confirm that the next scheduled update completes without requiring a manual reset. This final check separates a successful import from a setup that only worked once.
